Pharmaceutical Division Completes Expansion of Production, Testing Capacity

Over the past decade, Anderson Packaging has undertaken three expansions of their Assembly Drive facility in Rockford, Illinois. With the most recent construction project now completed, the contract packaging firm is well positioned to provide an even higher level of quality and service to their pharmaceutical customers.
The Assembly Drive location serves as Anderson's corporate headquarters and houses the main operations of the company's Pharmaceutical Division. The $4 million expansion added 87,000 square feet of new production and warehouse space and 9,000 square feet of new office space, bringing the total size of the facility to 245,000 square feet.
Anderson substantially augmented primary and secondary packaging capacity, installing additional equipment for every processing function, especially blister packaging, bottling and pouching. Anderson currently features nine Uhlmann UPS 4 thermoformers. A new fully integrated bottling line, the company's third, utilizes a Merrill slat filler. Anderson also installed a new Wrapade pouch filler. The company's 14 pouch fillers have the combined capacity to form, fill and seal over one billion pouches annually.
In addition, the environmentally controlled facility now contains 24 primary packaging suites. All suites have individual environmental controls and air-handling systems. Eight suites currently are designed for ultra-low humidity requirements.
Anderson's expansion was prompted by the rapidly growing demand for their contract packaging services. It came on the heels of an investment in new equipment and infrastructure improvements at the company's microbiology and analytical laboratories.
To complement the increased packaging capacity of the pharmaceutical unit, Anderson expanded their testing, identification and validation program. At three times the size of the original facility, the new state-of-the-art Quality Control Laboratory offers a full complement of the microbiological and analytical testing services.
Anderson's microbiology laboratory conducts indicator and pathogen tests on a variety of microorganisms. The analytical laboratory provides identification, uniformity, purity and limits testing on raw materials, in-process samples and finished goods. The expanded facility incorporates the latest equipment into Anderson's procedures and further enhances testing capabilities.
